The exhibition “Brancusi missing” honors the work of arguably the most influential sculptor of modern art. As a young man, Brancusi began his career in Paris working as an assistant to Rodin. However, he gradually moved away from traditional forms in his own work. He embraced a radical simplification of human and natural forms, influenced by the folk art and architecture of his homeland, Romania, and by the revolutionary early 20th-century discovery of non-European art, especially that from Africa.

Our small overview aims to illustrate the significant influence on his form and perspective through selected objects. Starting with inspiration from sculptures of “Art Premier” – a term that can also be applied to his work-up to the compelling reinterpretation of one of his major works, the Infinite Column, through Hans Arp’s “Colonne aux éléments interchangeables” and Johannes Brus’s humorous Brancusi “Paraphrases”.

Constantin Brancusi opened a vast gateway to a new world of art. This exhibition is a tribute to him.
