5 Years of “FOR FOREST – The Unending Attraction of Nature”
A temporary art intervention by Klaus Littmann

Today, we celebrate the 5th anniversary of “FOR FOREST – The Unending Attraction of Nature,” Austria’s largest public art intervention, which transformed the Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt into a breathtaking, living forest from September 8 to the end of October 2019 – a place where football is normally played. For two months, visitors gazed from the stadium stands at a Central European mixed forest with around 300 trees, some weighing up to six tons – a green oasis that reminded us of how closely nature and human existence are intertwined.

With FOR FOREST, we made a powerful statement about the importance of raising awareness for nature in an increasingly urbanized world. A living artwork that fascinated people far beyond Austria’s borders and prompted reflection. The project also served as a warning that the natural world we take for granted might one day only be observed in specially designated places – much like animals in zoos today. FOR FOREST demonstrated how art can heighten our awareness of environmental and climate protection. The image of the stadium forest traveled the world, remains unforgettable to this day, and continues to inspire.
