After moving to the Grosspeter Tower, the investment house will make the three vacant properties at Rittergasse 21/23/25 available for temporary cultural use until the end of its lease with SUVA. Klaus Littmann will use the three historic buildings until the end of 2028 under the title FOR ART.
Temporary art in the heart of Basel
In the middle of Basel’s old town, a stone’s throw from the Kunstmuseum (Museum of Fine Arts), cathedral and the Museum of Cultures, three inter-connected town houses – “Zur hohen Sonne” and “Rotberger Hof” – will become an art house and will be open to the public on numerous occasions over four years. A centrepiece of traditional Basel architecture will become a temporary art house – from the basement to the attic level, including two courtyards. A maze for explorers.
Carte blanche for Klaus Littmann
Klaus Littmann, who has made a name for himself as an artist, curator and producer of numerous art projects in Switzerland and abroad, was engaged to design and realize the project. He has already implemented several cultural interim uses, including Stücki I (1989) & Stücki II (1990), Bimbo Town (1993), Alte Stückfärberei Basel, Punktleuchten – now the head building of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel (2004), Canal Street in Arlesheim/Basel (2015), and the underground city Central Station in Basel (2016–2018).Together with a small team, he is planning a programme that focuses on the topics of drawing, collection, installation and environment. In addition to classic exhibition formats, visitors will be repeatedly surprised by spontaneous campaigns on current social topics.
Platform for art, collaboration and encounters
FOR ART sees itself as a platform for art, collaborations and spontaneous interventions. With their special architecture and atmosphere, the three buildings offer ideal conditions for a diverse programme: exhibitions, performative and other events, talks & lectures, film screenings and interactive campaigns.
Opening to coincide with Art Basel 2025
The first activities as part of FOR ART will coincide with the Art Basel 2025 art fair. Stay tuned
